Finding Duncan

Duncan Allan is a successful stock broker living with his wife in Wichita, KS, but haunted by his parents' sudden death in a car crash when he was a child. When he returns from a business trip to find his wife and brother at the kitchen table  holding hands, he assumes the worst and walks out on his wife, devastated. Fueled by despair he eventually moves to a remote fishing village along the North Sea in Scotland where he painfully rebuilds his life, aided by an old man and a young child. With a woman who loves him, a new career selling antiques, and a stepdaughter he cherishes, life is good again...until he again experiences loss. Can Duncan be find meaning and purpose now? And what about his wife, Amy, living in their family home all these years wondering why he left her? A novel about loss, reinventing one's life, and redemption that follows a man and a woman, each rebuilding shattered lives but living in two very different places, Wichita, the largest city in Kansas, and Portsoy, a tiny town in Scotland.

One reviewer wrote: "This is a satisfying novel; we care about the individuals and their joys and heartbreaks. We keep our fingers crossed for those who are grieving to find solace, for those whose lives are thrown into the air to be restored, for the young to grow up happy, for the separated to be reunited."

Another wrote: "Finding Duncan by Gretchen Eick is a layered, well-crafted novel. I relished meeting Eick’s authentic characters struggling with significant personal problems. The detailed descriptions of Kansas and Scotland are delightful as their residents encounter and cope with life, death, and love. Real Characters, Real Problems.

A third: "I began reading 'Finding Duncan' the night before I had an early wake-up call, so allowed myself only one chapter. That was a mistake! The chapters are as intertwined as the lives of the people they represent. The drama unfolds with a touch of mystery, observed from multiple perspectives which Dr. Eick carefully explores and successfully represents...worldly realities of brokenness with “kaleidoscope moments” of loveliness."
